Crankies to Melt the Coldest Heart: First Presentation

October

Porto

Crankies to Melt the Coldest Heart had its first performances as part of FIMP, at Teatro Campo Alegre, Rivoli, and also at the Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery.

And what a rich "crankada" (crankie-session) it was!

This is the first part of this new project, which received a review in the newspaper Jornal de Notícias:

"Right at the entrance to the Foyer of Teatro municipal Rivoli, in Porto, something seemed unusual: the public was offered a gummy candy to sweeten life’s bitterness and a paper tissue because we were all going to cry. The warning came from the performers of A Tarumba about their show, 'Crankies de fazer chorar as pedras da calçada' [Crankies to Melt the Coldest Heart].
Still slightly lost wandering through the space, visitors were invited to go to the Foyer's central square and dance. It was then that an impressive crankie began on the theme of the Mexican song by Pedro Infante, ‘Soy infeliz’ [I’m unhappy]. Faced with the fateful lyrics (…), images of perverse, adulterous women, capable of melting any man or crushing him with their power, were shown, as well as other images related to the Mexican universe with Catrinas, passed by. As this ethnographic display unfolded, the audience smiled, amazed by the association of images.
But the best was yet to come. Before a predominantly Portuguese audience, the crankie dedicated to the song ‘Óculos de Sol’ [Sunglasses], by Natércia Barreto, was shown. The audience was also encouraged to sing out loud. A Tarumba got the FIMP visitors eating gummy candies and shouting (...). A simple solution, very well performed.”
