True to its mission of revisiting the classics through object theatre, Cie Karyatides found inspiration in the story of Frankenstein to create a high-voltage jewel that lies somewhere between object theatre and opera.

On stage are two performers accompanied by an opera singer and a pianist, helped by a multitude of busts, puppets and objects of all kinds, which offer us a unique reading of the famous novel and invite the audience to question what are - or what should be - the human limits, in terms of equality, justice, responsibility and commitment.

This delightfully poetic horror version, shows a Victor Frankenstein haunted by his memories and the story of his creature in search of human warmth. Added to this are the moving songs of a benevolent maternal ghost, in a show that aims to connect with the phantasmagorical aspects of the novel, between magic and science. The ensemble is interspersed the haunting music of composers such as Verdi, Ives, Rachmaninoff and even Celine Dion. An ideal first step into the world of opera for all audiences.

"A mixture between object theatre and opera of great beauty and extreme precision." - Laurence Bertels, La Libre

"With sober precision and spectral beauty, this Frankenstein plays fiendishly with fire." - Catherine Makereel, Le Soir

"Frankenstein: funny, moving and philosophical. The music gives a sense of perfection (…). This piece is recommended for all the lovers of performing arts."

- Romy Leroy, Crescendo magazin

"Victor Frankenstein and his adopted sister Elizabeth, are divided by the two actors, in an intermittent exchange of genres, but also of figurines and busts that literally grow in size with the passage of time (...). Full of rhythm, combining in an intelligent way, humour and anguish, the body and the objects, the words and the music, the set seduces." - Estelle Spoto, focus.levif.be

BIO

At the heart of the work of the Belgian company Karyatides, based in Brussels, is the adaptation of classical works to object theatre. Founded by Karine Birgé and Marie Delhaye, graduates of the Conservatoire d'Art de Liège, the company has presented its work at the most important theatre festivals. Among his greatest hits are Madame Bovary, Carmen or Les Misérables. At the service of these stories, they develop a theatre of "figures", combining puppetry, object theatre and music. They play with these languages, each one with its specificities, and moving from one to the other. They use manufactured objects, sometimes full of references, they play with the commonplace, the cliché, thus provoking quirkiness from which poetry flows. These objects, future heroes of their stories or adventures, come from flea markets, Petits Riens or Emmaus. They were collected or traded according to the company's research and tours. They are almost bio, organic, ethical and completely recycled.
