Listening to the melody of your heart or when medical technology meets mechanical music.
This performance involves the audience, one participant at a time. A journey that begins with an ECG of the participant heart’s activity. Then, a performer punches holes in the paper strip, following the ECG pattern. The punched strip is inserted into a music box, to be played privately for the audience member, who gets to listen to the unique melody produced by his own heart. Delicate and unique.
Cardiophone is a special experience, a system that combines medical devices and a music box. This is a unique integration of physicality and sound. The act of translation medical graph into music notes charges the familiar medical procedure with deep emotional layers akin to what we usually attribute with a heart.
The piece was conceptualized in face of the death of Moran’s grandmother, whose heartbeats were drawn daily on a screen above her hospital bed. Moran was suddenly met with a strong desire to have some memento, some physical testimony to the heartbeat of the woman she loved so much. During the grieving process she realized that could translate the motion of the heart into a melody.
The Cardiophone has since played its melodies in Israel and abroad, in bell towers, museums, theatres, private homes and festivals, and will continue to travel the world.
