FIMFA Lx24
International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms
9 May to 2 June 2024 - Lisbon
Giant spiders, an old-fashioned butchery market booth of stuffed toys or an insect circus? Revolution and the fight for freedom in an adaptation of Victor Hugo's Les Miserables with hundreds of figures and objects? But also hyper-realistic puppets that talk about love and the freedom to be whoever we want to be. The 24th edition of FIMFA celebrates diversity and manipulates the imagination.
"Puppetry is a form of freedom of expression." - Johanny Bert - Théâtre de Romette
A Tarumba - Teatro de Marionetas produces in Lisbon, from 9th May to 2th June, the 24th edition of FIMFA Lx - International Festival of Puppetry and Animated Forms, with artistic direction by Luís Vieira and Rute Ribeiro.
At FIMFA, the focus is on objects, puppets, materials and images. On creations that stimulate the senses, and on the beauty of big and small things.
In the context of global turbulence, this edition was conceived as a space for sharing and discussion. To contradict reality, to break with what is common, to seek out new paths, to think and experiment different ways of living, being and making. Based on the idea of freedom, the topics covered range from love, the right to be different, social upheavals, war or refugee camps, but the 50th anniversary of the Carnation Revolution is also marked. These are current and fracturing themes that mark our daily lives and follow the festival's motto - the puppet as a mean of seeing and thinking the world with another gaze!
For 25 days, Lisbon becomes again the international platform for puppetry and animated forms, with the presentation of more than twenty projects from renowned companies and creators, and new values, most of them in their Portuguese premieres, from several countries: Belgium, Brazil, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Jordan, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, the United Kingdom and Portugal. In addition to the presentation of shows, a number of parallel activities are developed, which include workshops, films and meetings with artists, among others.
Highlighting also the project funded by the European Union: IMPULSE! New Focus on Puppetry and Visual Theatre, with three partners from Finland, Lithuania and Portugal: Aura of Puppets, Kosmos Theatre and A Tarumba. This project aims to promote contemporary puppetry and visual theatre, supporting the creation, training and circulation of European works and artists.
FIMFA Lx is an artistic project, open to new tendencies, of international dimension presenting an artistic and technical high-level programme, with a very contemporary point of view. A multidisciplinary project committed since 2001 to the promotion, dissemination, knowledge and visibility of Puppetry and Animated Forms.
Welcome to FIMFA!
