After centuries of laughter and open fights on the market places, Pulcinella is back!
Fed up with being screwed, Pulcinella will bring out the heavy artillery for the pleasure of young and old. A series of incredible accidents, a chase on the border between laughter and the macabre, Santa Pulcinella revives once again this emblematic and timeless character of the popular tradition.
Pulcinella is cousin of Punch, Petrouska and of our Dom Roberto. Fascinated by the vitality and expressiveness of the so-called glove puppets, the Théâtre Gudule is enthusiastically exploring Pulcinella, a character representative of the Neapolitan popular tradition. He is as endearing as he is ungainly, as agile as he is clumsy, as generous as he is mischievous.
In Santa Pulcinella, the puppets communicate with the audience without the use of text, using a language of rhythms and sounds. On top of the explosions of laughter, the beating of the sticks, the barking of the dog, the exhaling of death, sound effects and live music are added. Santa Pulcinella is a show that wants to touch everyone, regardless of the cultural, political or social context. It is based on the traditional Pulcinella e il cane storyline, which has been passed down from puppeteer to puppeteer for over 400 years. The various characters come to meet Pulcinella, with whom they inevitably become entangled in conflicts, pranks and fights. Their naive and burlesque logic seems to reflect all the facets of us human beings.

Santa Pulcinella is an invitation to let go, to laugh together at the world, at others and especially at ourselves.

"It made the eyes of children and adults shine." - La Montagne
"A charming play that goes far beyond political correctness." - Schwäbishes Tagblatt
"Playful and entertaining." - Le Dauphiné Libéré

BIO
Théâtre Gudule has been working to fulfil our innermost desires for fun and poetry since 2021. The company likes to work with the arts of puppetry, the traditions of folk fairs, the plastic arts and music to create spectacular forms. Gudule shows us his mechanical tricks, his animated discoveries and shares all his absurd-poetic desires. One day, Gudule is going to hit the road with its artists, its sensational micro-creations and its popcorn stall… until then, Gudule wants joy.
